Car Accident Injuries: Why You Should See a Chiropractor

Back To Life Chiropractic

A car accident can happen in just a few seconds, but the effects on your body can last for weeks, months, or even longer.

One of the most common mistakes people make after an accident is assuming they are okay because they don’t have significant pain right away. The body can respond to the sudden forces of a collision with muscle tension, inflammation, and changes in normal movement. Sometimes symptoms don’t become noticeable until hours or even days later.

What Happens to Your Body in a Car Accident?

During a collision, your body can be subjected to forces that it was never designed to handle. Even a relatively low-speed accident can cause your head, neck, and spine to move suddenly while your body is restrained by a seat belt.  This is called shearing and is what makes spinal injuries more prevalent after an auto accident.

This can contribute to problems such as:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Whiplash-type injuries
  • Muscle spasms and tightness
  • Headaches
  • Shoulder pain
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Pain or stiffness when turning or bending
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Changes in posture or movement
  • Pain that develops hours or days after the accident

The absence of immediate pain does not necessarily mean that everything is functioning normally.

Why Does Pain Sometimes Show Up Later?

After an accident, the body’s natural stress response can temporarily mask discomfort. Adrenaline and other physiological responses may make it difficult to recognize the full extent of an injury immediately.

As the body settles down, inflammation and muscle guarding may become more noticeable. You may wake up the next morning feeling much worse than you did immediately following the collision.

That is one reason an evaluation soon after an accident can be important—even if you feel relatively good.

How Can Chiropractic Care Help?

A chiropractor evaluates how the accident may have affected your musculoskeletal system, including the spine, joints, muscles, and normal range of motion.

At Back to Life Chiropractic, our goal is not simply to ask, “Where does it hurt?” We want to understand how your body is functioning following the collision.

Depending on your individual situation, chiropractic care may focus on:

  • Restoring normal joint motion
  • Reducing muscle tension and spasms
  • Improving range of motion
  • Addressing changes in posture and movement
  • Supporting the body’s natural recovery process
  • Helping you return to your normal activities

Your care should be based on your individual examination and needs rather than simply treating the area where you feel pain.

You Don’t Have to Be in Severe Pain to Get Checked

Some people avoid getting evaluated because they think their accident wasn’t serious enough.

Others say:

“I feel okay. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow.”

While every accident is different, getting evaluated can help identify problems that may not be obvious to you.

A chiropractic examination can provide another perspective on how your body responded to the forces of the accident.

What About Whiplash?

Whiplash is commonly associated with rear-end collisions, but similar rapid movements of the head and neck can occur in many types of crashes.

The neck may move rapidly forward and backward while the surrounding muscles and joints attempt to stabilize the head. This can result in pain, stiffness, headaches, and restricted movement.

Importantly, not every person involved in a collision experiences the same symptoms. Your evaluation should take your individual circumstances into account.

Don’t Ignore What Your Body Is Telling You

Your vehicle may show obvious signs of an accident, but your body doesn’t always provide the same immediate evidence.

A bumper can be damaged and repaired. Your body may compensate for an injury without producing significant pain at first.

If you’ve been involved in a car accident, don’t simply assume that feeling okay immediately means everything is okay.
